New Regulations Mean New Jobs
By Elizabeth Harrin (London) The Wall Street Reform Act introduced a raft of new rules with the aim of stabilising the U.S. financial systems. These rules now need to be implemented, and someone has got to do the implementing. Are you in the market for a new job? Maybe a move to the public sector is the right move for you. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission alone is expecting to recruit for about 800 positions [PDF], according to Chairman Mary Schapiro. “A principal lesson learned... |

Try Finding a Mentor through a Job Club
Stephanie writes: I am in need of a mentor! I read your article The Value of a Mentor online and I thought it was great! I didn’t have the best role models, if any, growing up and I am really lost in my life right now, I want to be a writer and potentially design and create my own magazine. However, I have absolutley no idea what to do with any of my passions. I have never done this before so the process is unfamiliar. What would you suggest? The Career Doctor responds: Since you... |

Some Days I Want To Kick a Small Animal
By CAL (curmudgeon at large) Did you hear that the Department of Labor just started their very own job board? Evidently, the nation’s 75,000 job boards are not doing the job. So someone thought, “Hey, why don’t we get into the job board business, too? Plus this will be an evergreen type program, no one will want to kill a government job board.” It is called permanent civil service. Think I am over-reacting? Well, here in Minnesota, we have our very own state run... |

Networking is an Investment
Rita Carey, career consulting and leadership coach, left a great comment on my post about networking (does it work?) post on Friday. Her entire comment is worth reading but I wanted to share her very last thought: “Networking, done well, is an investment.” Think about it – if you have $100 and you invest it in something relatively safe you might be able to get, say $120 out later. Is later tomorrow? NO! (usually not) You might have to wait for a year before you can get the increase. Usually... |

A Lot of Practice Makes Perfect
I’ve met a lot of naturally talented people in this world, but only a precious few of them make a living at their craft. In his book Outliers: The Story of Success, one of my favorite business authors, Malcolm Gladwell, asks a compelling question: why do some people succeed, living productive and impactful lives, while so many more never reach their potential? Gladwell claims that superstars don't arise out of nowhere, propelled by genius. Instead, he says: “They... |

Game theory in High Stakes Poker
I came across a great hand on the TV show High Stakes Poker. The hand is from Season 3, Episode 12, and it features poker professionals Phil Ivey and Brad Booth (yes, the same Brad Booth who used some psychology and game theory in Poker After Dark). Some background on the hand: Booth had appeared on High Stakes Poker before. This time he bought in for a cool million dollars, hoping to intimidate opponents with a big stack. This is one of Phil Ivey’s first hands on High Stakes Poker and he... |

How to Succeed in Business
I really struggled with what to write about this week, hence the late posting on Monday instead of Sunday. Some of the tardiness is attributed to my brain being filled with debits and credits in advance of an accounting quiz this week. Since it is Labor Day (and I have been laboring over my accounting coursework), I thought it fitting to write about a few pearls of wisdom I gleaned about the labor market this week (as opposed to the job search topics I normally cover). We’ve all heard the... |

To Fax Your Resume Or Not To Fax, That Is The Question
A client asked me if he should fax his resume, in order to get more attention. He was surprised when I said no. Then it hit me - There is still a misconception in the job seeker audience about faxed resumes. The thought process in faxing resumes is to gain an advantage by delivering in a way that gets noticed. It was a sure fire way to get your resume seen…about 10 years ago. But not so much anymore – here’s why. ( Continued ... Why Is Faxing Your Resume Not Such A Great... |

Surveyed Employers: A Significant Number Want to See a Cover Letter
About 43 percent of employers surveyed in the 2010 Orange County Resume Survey* said that candidates must submit a cover letter for each position, while almost 30 percent said cover letters are not important, and the employers don’t have time to read them anyway. Another 27.4 percent have no preference for whether candidates include a cover letter or not. This 43 percent figure is lower than the 66 percent cited over the past several years as strongly preferring that job-seekers include... |

Final Product of Tweeted Resume: Spreadsheet Resume
Last week, Gabriella Evelina Britth (pictured), fulfilled her promise to tweet her resume (albeit an unusual resume) over five days. The final tweet links to a spreadsheet on Google Docs that catalogs all the preceding tweets, gives the links contained in each tweet, categorizes each into “personal” or “professional” (the tweets are almost evenly divided between professional and personal), and tells the type of site or medium each link represents. Most tweets have a hashtag. Britth’s... |
