What Would Dad Say

What Would Dad Say Frequently wrong, never in doubt
Cutting Down Trees, Some Chainsawing Tips I Heard About
I heard about this so I thought I would interrupt the normal subject matter and pass these two tips along. If you have a dead tree in your yard, and you decide to crank up your old chain saw…this is what I heard, mind you…be sure you check for a couple of things.  First, check to make completely sure you know which way the tree will fall once you cut it down.  I heard that a fail-safe method to make sure that it does not hit anything of importance is to estimate how high the tree...

Networking Tool For Everyone (free)
They say the best method for finding a job is via “networking.”  (The second best is to find a job on a company’s own website, made simpler by LinkUp.)  But since few of us “network” for a living, we are awfully bad at it.  I am trying to help here with a new tool you can use. The typical networking conversation goes something like this, “I am looking for  a job, do you know anyone who is hiring?”  Ok, that might be too blunt, but generally speaking…that’s...

I Must Be Missing Something
Gulf Coast oil spill The spill has gushed at least 1.6 million gallons of oil into waters off the coast. [Since corrected to an estimated 126 million gallons as of June 21 by further research.] Ok, that is bad.  But then there is this: Supertanker capacity varies, but Wikipedia says most carry about 2 million barrels. The largest tanker in the world is the Jahre Viking (now called the Knock Nevis).  It carries 4 million barrels of oil. I used the google and found that there are 50 gallons...

Tony Hayward is Tone Deaf
And since he has no PR advisers, I thought I would give him some advice on things he might want to avoid in the coming weeks, until the Oil Slick is a memory. 10 Things Tony Hayward Should Not Do 1.     Don’t go bar hopping with Tiger. 2.     Don’t be seen anywhere with that UK goalie, he is as radioactive as you are. 3.     Other ‘sports’ to avoid: cricket (seriously), polo, bird watching with Ralph Lauren, and anything that Prince Charles plays and likes 4.     Don’t...

My Dad Could Be Superman If He Wanted and Other True Stories
Ed. Note:  Remember those grade school days when you would brag about your dad?  Some stories were real, others were fairly far fetched.  Can you be BOTH Yogi Berra AND Superman?  Over time, those larger-than-life dads, er, heroes, faded and became smaller, more real, flawed. It has been years since anyone asked me about my own father, so that I thought others might feel the same way.  So I asked some of my on line friends about their dads, and to share a story or two about them.  Thanks...

Heat Up Your Job Searching Skills: Networking 101 and 102
Ed. Note. The following post is part of the Career Collective series of monthly posts. The best way to find a job is via networking, people say.  And the second way is via the company’s own career page on their website.  My company finds all those company websites with careers and presents them to job searchers on www.LINKUP.com.  But my article today is about networking and how it looks from my side of the table. I get asked a lot to “network.”  It might be because of LinkUp or my...

Need Some Motivational Help?
I heard it again on Monday. A job seeker group wanted to know  E X A C T L Y how to keep one’s motivation high when the frustrations of job searching day after day seem overwhelming. I didn’t have a great idea for them.  Think Positive rah rah rah. Instead I should have told them to watch these two videos.  Score! (thanks daily.finerminds.com)

Why Soccer Won’t Catch On
Ok, flamethrowers at the ready? I tried to watch some of the World Cup soccer the other day, the USA vs UK match, game, gaggle, whatever they call it.  Frankly, the noise drove me crazy.  Come to find out the noise was not swarms of bees but a horn that is popular at soccer events called the Vuvuzel.  Spare me.  The constant buzz is more annoying than Howard Cosell, and he died years ago.  Bob Costas then. Then the UK goalie let a shot go in that I could have stopped.  Seriously.  What’s...

6 Attributes That May Help You Get Hired
There are unspoken and un-advertised intangibles that hiring managers look for in applicants.  Here are a few intangibles that will make you stand out. 1.  ”See work.”  We all know what this means.  Are you the type of person who must be told every little thing?  Or are you able to see the work before it is assigned to you?  I think one of the highest compliments you can get is “He sees work.” 2.  Likeability.  I used to call this the fly-across-the-country test....

New Job Searching App for the IPAD
The LinkUp IPad app (FREE, what did you expect from LinkUp?) is now available via iTunes.  Just search on ‘job search’ and you can see it, download it, marvel at it. You will marvel at it.  It’s that good.  Mah-va-lous. Our development team used all the Ipad features and functionality.  This is not some slap it together, let’s get it out Ipad app.  It is not an universal app either…you know, one that was really made for the IPhone, but now made to fit on the...

Irrevocable Mistakes at Work
Heard about Jim Joyce, right?  He is the umpire who cost Armando Galarraga a perfect game…only twenty EVER in major league baseball…with a horrendous call at first base with two out in the ninth inning. He’s gone from goat to hero.  Sportsmanship and all that.  I heard Matt Lauer thank him this morning for the “teaching moment” he gave us all.  To be fair, Umpire Joyce did admit his mistake right away, took the abuse like the man he undoubtedly is, apologized personally to Armando...

LinkUp on CBS News
CBS, the network of Walter Cronkite, Edward R. Murrow and David Caruso, has long been the standard bearer in television.  This was before Current TV, E!, the Scrabble Network and the Network for Left Handed People started stealing “share.”  Still.  It’s TV.  T. V. Watch CBS News Videos Online Which is exactly why we are especially proud to mention that LINKUP.com, our job search engine, was featured in an UP to THE MINUTE segment with anchor Michelle Gielan (Trivia: Michelle...

New BP Logos
I have this online friend, let’s call him Michael, who lives in Romania.  (Thanks Al Gore, I love your internet.) He makes his living as a graphic artist…and I have used him with great results.  So this morning I am watching the Morning News Shows where, no surprise, the news about BP’s oil spill dominates.  Don’t even get me started. At that time, about three hours ago, Michael shoots me a message and asks if I have any work for him.  On a whim, I tell him if he can...

8 Things That Are Going Well in America
I am getting a bit tired of the harping, fear-mongering and bad stuff on the news these days.  It’s my fault, I have been a news-on-cable morning junkie.  You can get anything at 6 am. But watching these shows can make you miss some important happenings.  What better weekend to share things than Memorial Day.  Here are a few you may have missed.  What things are going well for you? 1.  Paris Hilton has pretty much dropped out of sight.  Remember how she was everywhere.  Everywhere. ...

Men I Grew Up With, Another One Dies: RIP Art Linkletter
Millions of baby boomers remember Art Linkletter, who died today at 97.  Truth:  I thought he had already died.  In this age of YouTube, we forget that some early TV was simply precious and timeless.  Watch this clip featuring Art from his old TV series HouseParty. You are welcome.

New College Grads Who Are Taking the Summer Off: Some Unsolicited Advice
Like Spring Break trips, cell phones for six-year-olds,  and $4 lattes, taking the summer off after graduating from college seems like the thing to do.  It must have something to do with all the pain and suffering one has to fight through on college campuses today.   Summer is about on us, graduation speeches are being ghost written, and practiced…except for Ann Curry.  Young 22 and 23 year olds are starting to search for that all-important first job.  Here are some quick tips: 1....

Things I Want To Fess Up To
Ed. Note:  Inspired by Connecticut’s Richard Blumenthal who joined John Edwards in the Lawmaker’s Liars Club,  I want to make it clear that I have not done the following.  Please add your own “fesses” in your comments. I did not win a gold medal. I did not invent the first computer game. I did not date Racquel Welch. Nor Connie Chung. I did not walk across the USA. I was not at Kent State, or Woodstock, or in the MeKong Delta. I was not in the front row of the last...
