Unusual Requests and Rants with JibberJobber
Every once in a while I get a heated (HEATED!) email from someone about some crazy thing we’re doing to them because they signed up on JibberJobber. Here’s a recent “I’m deleting my account because” message: “Because you guys gave me the upgrade when i didn’t want it! I do not want to pay almost 10 dollars a month for this job website.” There are two points here: We gave her an upgrade, even though she didn’t want it. When you sign up for...

Favorite Friday: LinkedIn Recommendation from Benjamin Franklin
When I do LinkedIn webinars I always get a question about LinkedIn Recommendations.  A common question is: what do you do with the LinkedIn Recommendation request from someone who you don’t know? How utterly lame it is for someone to ask for a LinkedIn Recommendation if you don’t know them…. a LinkedIn Recommendation is essentially a professional endorsement.  Can you professionally endorse someone you don’t know, or haven’t worked with? On my LinkedIn blog I wrote...

Women’s Ally Interview on LinkedIn Stuff
I did a quick 12 minute interview with Diahann Boock of Women’s Ally… here are some questions she asked… click here to hear the entire interview. Diahann Boock - Women's Alley (click for interview)

Census: Fake Jobs Bubble Burst
A few months ago there were grand reports that the unemployment rate had changed (for the better), and the feds were patting themselves on the back for making such a great change. I don’t think it is the role of the federal government to create jobs, as that is unsustainable (unless we all get taxed at much higher rates).  But the feds created a bunch of jobs… temp, high paying jobs that would all GO AWAY. Guess what?  They are going away.  And the benefit they saw (lower unemployment...

Consultant Launch Pad by Peter Osborne
I’ve (virtually) known Peter Osborne for a long time. He’s an executive I met in his job search and we’ve followed each other over time. Peter recently launched a new site/service/club (what do I call it??) to help people consult while they are in transition, or as an alternative to a traditional job.  His new site is Consultant Launch Pad. This is brilliant because … how do I put this, so many OLD people aren’t going to land a satisfying job. How’s that for...

Networking: Tell Your Story
The LinkedIn for Executives webinar is TODAY (Wednesday)… details at Experts-Connection. It’s going to be awesome… seriously. How do you tell your story? How do you create your bio on Twitter, or your LinkedIn Summary, or a networking 30 second commercial? How do you really communicate your value-add in an interview in a way that leaves a strong, memorable impression? For many of us this is just too hard, for various reasons.  One reason is that we aren’t good at talking...

LinkedIn for Executives Webinar
Tomorrow (Wednesday) I’m doing a special webinar for Experts Connection (Netshare) called LinkedIn for Executives.  This is a 90 minute webinar and will be for those who are in transition as well as for executives who want to get more out of LinkedIn.  In other words, it’s not just on how to use LinkedIn in a job search. We’ll focus on strategy and concepts as well as tactics to get results…. here’s a link to more details.

I’m Back In Town!
The LinkedIn for Executives webinar is THIS WEEK (Wednesday)… details at Experts-Connection. It’s going to be awesome… seriously. Last week I packed up my family (7 of us in a van) and we went on a special campout where we pulled handcarts to reenact a tiny part of the Oregon/California trail. This is the trail and area were pioneers who settled Utah and seekers or gold and adventure traveled in the 1800s. It was a terrific experience, even though we cut our last night short...

Paul Buchheit on Wealth, Jobs and Dreams
I somehow stumbled across the blog of Paul Buchheit who was pontificating on what to do with millions of dollars. I had no idea who Paul was and guessed he was just some normal dude who thought about what he would do with millions of dollars.  Turns out, he’s the guy who created Gmail, developed the prototype for Google AdSense (which is the vehicle that makes Google worth the billions they are worth), and came up with Google’s motto: “Don’t be evil,” back in 2001....

Long-Term Unemployment is Highest on Record (scary)
Here is some interesting information, from the Huffington Post: Long-Term Unemployed Now 46 Percent Of Unemployed, Highest Percentage On Record. This is a scary aspect of “unemployment” that you don’t hear about often.  I think, though, in the scariness, there is opportunity.  Many of those who are long-term unemployed, and want to get back to work, are skilled and/or hungry.  Perhaps even desperate.  Maybe some of them will start their own companies. The strength of the...

The Hidden Job Market – Is it a Myth??
I have never heard this before (that the hidden job market doesn’t exist) and wouldn’t give it 2 seconds of my attention except that a well-respected recruiter/career person is the one making the claim. Gerry Crispin apparently said (in 2009) some of the following (quoted from Miriam Salpeter’s Examiner article): that the hidden job market is one of the biggest myths of job-hunting; that, in fact, it doesn’t exist: “Maybe a few thousand out of 20 million jobs are...

College Graduate’s Job Search Going Bad?
Here’s a great post from Thom Singer about a recent grad in a not-fun job search.  Thom has some good advice (6 points, including 1. Don’t get discouraged, 4. Ask your friends how they found their jobs, 5. Network like your life depends on it… because it does!). One thing that jumps out at me from this story is this: I never heard from her again. She did not have business cards, so I had no way of reaching out to her to see if she has made any progress in finding a job. Do you...

45% of execs ready for new opportunity?
My next big LinkedIn webinar is at Experts-Connection. It’s going to be awesome… seriously. I just got a notice from the Execunet Suite LinkedIn Group that was quite interesting: According to ExecuNet’s 2010 Executive Job Market Intelligence Report, 45% of corporate leaders are considering or preparing to voluntarily leave their organizations. Many of them are your colleagues. Why do you think that almost half of America’s corporate leaders ready to move on? This question was posted...

Organize Your Job Search Needs? This is your week!
It’s been quite hectic around here lately… I announced the JibberJobber anniversary upgrade options a month ago but never really let too many people (like, my users!) know.  This week we emailed all of the people who have signed up (and have chosen to get those types of emails) letting them know that the special is good through this week. There are two bundle options, both of which include the buy-on-year-get-one-free.  That is, for $99 you get 24 months of JibberJobber, which comes...

How Governments Solve the Unemployment Problem
I found this yesterday… it is across the pond in Europe: Council helps jobless women find a rich man to keep them. I have a hard time believing this is really true, so if it is a hoax, forgive me for spending time on it.  If it isn’t… they are giving women make-overs (because that’s how you win a “rich man,” by looking hot), they are hoping to save welfare payments equal to €400,000 by marrying off 70 jobless, single women (who need make-overs) they are...

Job Club Radio & Utah County Job Club
This week we’re celebrating JibberJobber’s 4 year anniversary with special bundles.  On Wednesday, June 23 2010 I’m doing a LinkedIn for Executives: BEYOND the Basics webinar.  More info here. Yesterday I was on a 45 minute radio show called Job Club Radio.  You can listen to the entire show here.  I think I’m getting bold, or grumpy… I don’t know, you tell me.  It was one of my funner radio interviews I’m going to speak at the Utah County Job...

Unemployed people suck, right? Let’s not hire them.
I must be getting grumpy in my old age, with all of this venting I’m doing!  This post really ticks me off.  I just wrote a post on Peter Newfield’s Career Resumes blog (I’ve been blogging there for the last many months) titled The Unemployed Will Not Be Considered.  WHAT??? It comes from a Huffington Post article of a similar name… go check out Peter’s blog to see what I wrote. This practice is archaic and out of touch with reality.  Do these companies, discriminating...

LinkedIn for Job Search (DVD)
A few weeks ago I started shipping the second edition of the LinkedIn for Job Seekers DVD. I gotta tell you, humbly, that this $49.95 LinkedIn DVD is A.W.E.S.O.M.E. It is 3 solid hours of webinar-like instruction.  This is not talking-head stuff – you literally watch over my shoulder (you watch my screen) as I go over LinkedIn and show you, as a job seeker, how to use LinkedIn. The funny thing is this is not just for job seekers (unless you believe we are ALL job seekers).  If you want...

Blue Collar Job Search – Job Seeker Newsletter
This is a continuation of the series of Blue Collar Job Search posts.  Have you figured out that most of this applies to white collar job seekers? Funny how that happens. Yesterday I met with my buddy and we talked about creating a regular job search newsletter.  This is something I had blogged about before but I couldn’t find the post, so I’ll write it again After going through various things, including word-smithing a pretty good elevator pitch, we were ready to let people...

Getting Laid Off? Take Advantage of Your Benefits!
I got some brilliant comments on the post from yesterday titled HP Layoffs… From reinkefj: I’d also suggest to IMMEDIATELY get medical and dental appointments. Assuming that your benefits are tied to your employment, it’s time to find out what problems you have. (Physical problems; everyone has problems! Unemployment might be the least of them. If you have a problem, NOW is the time to find it not when COBRA runs out.) Ditto for ALL family members. QUICK, time flies. From Katy: And cash...
