Getting Things Done: What's the point?
Here's a question for those of you who are Getting Things Done fans. As you devour GTD books and create systems that allow you to squeeze more productivity per square minute than should be humanly possible, have you ever wondered, "What's the point?" Don't get me wrong. I'm not criticizing taking a GTD approach. I could use an uber-sized chunk of that in my own life. I mean the question more literally. What is the point to it? Where are all your jam-packed days leading you? Today over... |

If the drawbridge is stuck, take a nap
Stopped on the freeway at midnight, leaning back with my eyes contentedly closed, I heard an astonished voice say, "He's taking a nap!"I was driving back from the airport after a short trip to the east coast. Fifteen minutes from home, I felt the relaxation that comes from knowing a long, grueling day is winding down. And then suddenly, as traffic ground inexplicably to a halt, I didn't. It soon became clear I wasn't going anywhere soon, and neither was the ever-growing line of cars behind... |

Positive realism: The best of both worlds

Positive realism: The best of both worlds
Are you an optimist, a pessimist, or a realist? Do you like to give your day a dose of positive thinking, or does that smarmy over-happiness make you want to barf? Over on I Hate My Job, Pamela Grundy spotlights the perspective of Barbara Ehrenreich, author of the book Bright-Sided and one of those rare voices who is vigorously anti-positive-thinking. Ehrenreich's take is that a slavish focus on positive thinking is dangerous, cruel, and leads to poor decisions. In a corporate environment,... |

Use your wildest dreams to find a career you love
One question I often see to help people find work they love is, "What are your wildest dreams?" The question is intended partially to help people think about what they love, and partially to expand their focus past what's readily within reach. To make the most out of the question's ability to help you zero in on a direction that lights you up, you need to take it a step further than "What are my wildest dreams?" For each of the dreams you identify, spend some time asking, "Why? What is it about... |

Are you taking advantage of your pain?
Today on the US News & World Report career blog, I wrote about 3 reasons you need pain in your career. In a nutshell, those reasons are: Pain can be a catalyst for positive change. Pain is a warning bell. Pain can challenge you to learn and grow. If you use it correctly, pain can be one of the best allies you have in your career (and your life). The trouble is, most people are so busy trying to avoid it, or bemoaning the fact that "that's just the way things are," that... |

Need a lift? Sniff a lemon
I'm always on the lookout for ways to add a quick dose of feelgood to your day. Here's an interesting tip from Natural Health magazine:The zingy fresh scent of a lemon may help elevate your mood. Scientists have discovered a link between depression and our sense of smell: Citrus fragrances—lemons in particular—directly affect neurotransmitters in the brains of mice. The aromas help boost serotonin, a feel-good hormone, and reduce levels of norepinephrine, a stress hormone. --Time for a... |

4 reasons you should celebrate your success
A friend and I were talking recently about growing up watching ABC's Wide World of Sports on the weekends. While one mention of the line from their intro - "the thrill of victory...and the agony of defeat" - immediately brought to mind the image of a ski jumper biting it on the way down, I realized that I couldn't for the life of me remember what the accompanying clip for the thrill of victory was. Unfortunately, a lot of people live their lives that way. They remember the failures and face... |
