Successful People Avoid Making Mistakes That Damage Their Brand and Their Relationships
Pearl Buck was one of my favorite authors when I was a child.  I loved The Good Earth.  The other day, I came across a quote by her that grabbed me – so much so that I went looking for some paper to copy it… “Every great mistake has a half way moment, a splt second when it can be recalled and perhaps remedied.” As a career success coach, I read that and said, “Wow!” I tell my career success coaching clients that stuff is going to happen as you go through life – some of it unpleasant. ...

Choose Success — Surround Yourself With Positive People
I’ve had a rough week.  My 85 year old dad fell and hit his head.  He didn’t realize it but he had some bleeding inside his skull.  This caused him to have more falls – especially when he was awakened in the night.  He had to have surgery to drain the blood from his skull as it was causing excessive pressure on his brain.  He is OK, but having lost my mother about a year ago, I was concerned and distracted. When I get concerned and distracted, it is difficult for me to concentrate on...

Successful People Face — and Slay Their Personal Jabberwockies
Like about a zillion other people, I went to see Alice in Wonderland in 3D over the weekend.  Tim Burton did a good job directing an enjoyable film.  But as a career success coach, I’m always looking for messages that relate to my message on career success.  I found it near the end of the film.  If you’ve read Alice in Wonderland, you know that the White Queen tells her “Some days I believe in six impossible things before breakfast.”  I don’t want to spoil the end of the film for...

Successful People Practice Unselfish Thinking
I was in line waiting to pay at a book store the other day and I saw a small book on the counter.  It was called How Successful People Think, and written by John Maxwell, a prolific writer.  He has sold over 16 million books.  Because I’m a career success coach who is always looking for new information to help my career success coaching clients, I bought the book.  And I’m glad I did.    It contains some great career success advice. Chapter 10 is titled, “Practice Unselfish Thinking.” ...

Lee Iacocca, Common Sense and Success
In his book Where Have All the Leaders Gone? Lee Iacocca makes a great point about one of my favorite topics: Common Sense.  He says he learned it from one of his first bosses and mentors, a guy by the name of Charlie Beacham.  Mr. Iacocca describes Charlie Beacham as a “Southerner with a warm drawl, a huge smile and a core of steel.”  I don’t have a drawl, but I would be happy to be known as some with a huge smile and a core of steel.  Here is the advice Lee Iacocca got from Charlie...

Rugby, Character, Self Confidence and Success
If you read this blog with any regularity, you probably know that I am a rugby football enthusiast.  I think it is a great sport.  I played for over 30 years.  I learned a lot about life on the rugby pitch.  I think I am a better career success coach as a result of my participation in rugby.  In my retirement, I support youth rugby.  The other day, I got a note from Bill Baer, a friend and coach of the Denver East High School Rugby Club, the reigning Colorado High Schools Rugby State Champions. ...

What the Olympic Closing Ceremonies Can Teach Us About Career Success
The Olympics are over.  I enjoyed watching them over the past two weeks.  The last sporting event of this year’s games, the USA – Canada hockey game, was really something.  I hope you got a chance to see it.  Even though my home team lost it was an exciting, well played match that went into overtime.  I also tuned into the closing ceremonies last night.  I saw something there that I want to comment on in today’s post. If you recall, at the opening ceremonies there was a problem with...

Hard Work and Success — One Follows the Other
If you want to create the successful life and career you want and deserve, you need to become an outstanding performer.  As a career success coach, I always tell my career success coaching clients that outstanding performers are willing to put in the hard work to do whatever it takes to succeed. This is a tough time to be looking for a job.  Many of my career success coaching clients are having difficulty getting interviews let alone landing a job.  However, I heard a story not too long ago...

Successful People Go For It
As a career success coach, I’m always looking for new and different ways to get across my common sense ideas on career success.  On Friday I had a great opportunity.  I was invited to see the Go For It! Institute’s program in action at a K through 8 school in Denver.  If you don’t know about the Go For It! Institute, you should.  The Institute teaches kids the value of things like positive attitude, believing in themselves, positive habits, goal setting and persistence.  Their work...

Successful People are Optimists — They Ask For, and Often Get What They Want
I saw this quote from George Will on line the other day… “The nice part about being a pessimist is that you are constantly being either proven right or pleasantly surprised.” I couldn’t let it go.  As a career success coach, I’m always telling my clients that they can boost their self confidence through the power of optimism.  So I don’t see a lot of value in being a pessimist.  If you’re “constantly being proven right” you’re probably creating your own self fulfilling prophecies. ...

Want Success? Take a Lesson From Lindsey Vonn
Did you watch the Olympics last night?  The Americans did pretty well, winning gold medals in skiing – Lindsey Vonn, speed skating – Shani Davis and snowboarding – Shaun White.  Good for them.  Their years of training, hard work and dedication paid off. In this post I want to focus on Lindsey Vonn.  She lives in Vail, my favorite Colorado mountain town.  I live and do my career success coaching work in Denver, so I think of her as kind of a neighbor.  More important, I find her story...

50 Famous People Who Failed at Their First Attempt at Career Success
As a career success coach, I always advise my clients to stick with it – to demonstrate their commitment to their career success to themselves and others by shaking off setbacks and moving forward.  This morning, I received an email from Katina Solomon at OnLineCollege.org telling me about a new blog post she had just done and asking me to pass it on to my readers.  I loved this post.  It tells the stories of “50 Famously Successful People Who Failed at First.”  These people come from...

Successful People Make No Little Plans
“Make no little plans. They have no magic to stir men’s blood and probably will not be realized. Make big plans. Aim high in hope and work.” This quote from Daniel Burnham is a perfect to begin a post on outstanding performance, one of the success competencies that is part of my Career Success GPS system and that I discuss in detail in several of my books: Straight Talk for Success, I want YOU…To Succeed, Star Power, Your Success GPS and 42 Rules to Jumpstart Your Professional Success. ...

Career Success Advice: Be Nice
Did you watch the Winter Olympics Opening Ceremony Friday night?  I liked it for its simple elegance.  As I was watching, I took note of a line in Slam Poet Shane Koyczan’ tribute to Canada, We Are More… And some say what defines us Is something as simple as “please” and “thank you” The Canadian audience roared when they heard that line.  After all, Canadians are known for being polite.   Creating positive personal impact is one of the competencies that comprise my Career Success...

Become a Remarkable Creature: Take Personal Responsibility for Your Own Success
Successful people are clear on their purpose in life – and they are committed to it.  They take personal responsibility for creating the successful lives and careers that they want and deserve. As a career success coach in Denver, I’m always looking for ways to get my common sense message about career and life success across to my clients, people who read my blog and listen to my podcasts.  That’s why I was struck by a passage in Tracy Chevalier’s new book, Remarkable Creatures.  If...

Successful People Create Their Own “Orange Code”
I was reading the February 2010 issue of The Costco Connection – I love their store and I love their member mag.  There was an article on ING Direct, an on line bank.  I’ve been an ING depositor for over 10 years.  They give great service. The color orange is part of their brand.  The Orange Code is the ING Direct company constitution.  It 1s 12 common sense points for running a business.  However, as the Denver Career Success Coach, I couldn’t help but notice that the Orange Code...
